|Over 200 victims of human trafficking rescued in Angeles City|
MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) — Joint operatives from the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) rescued 268 women, including 15 minors, who were alleged victims of trafficking, from 10 establishments in Angeles City today, Justice Secretary Leila de Lima said.
At a press briefing, De Lima said she received the initial report from Department of Justice (DOJ) Undersecretary Jose Vicente Salazar, head of the inter-agency council against trafficking.
The raid was conducted by departments including the NBI and the PNP after several weeks of planning and surveillance operations in at least three night clubs.
“We have dispatched state prosecutors to Angeles City to conduct inquest proceedings. It’s a multi-agency effort,” she said, adding this is a big boost to government efforts to curb human trafficking.
